Tibes Taino Indian Ceremoninal Park & Museum

After an approximate two-hour drive you will arrive at the Indian Ceremonial Center of Tibes located in the city of Ponce. This Center was discovered in 1975 and it’s considered is one of the most important archeological discoveries made in the Antilles because it provides an insight as to how the indigenous tribes of the Igneris and Taínos lived and played.

Decades of careful archeological excavations unearthed and reconstructed seven unique ball courts or “bateyes” that where constructed approximately 800 years before the discovery of our Island. Here they used to celebrate their "Areytos" or traditional festivities, their sports and other important events. At the Museum in the Ceremonial Park of Tibes, you will see burials, charms, idols, vessels, petroglyphs and other artifacts used by the Taíno and Igneris Indians. Some replicas are available at Museum Souvenir Shop.
